Welcome Station

Along most state borders soon after you cross a state line you will come to a rest area described as a Welcome Station. These are excellent stops and a good place to pick up some neat free stuff. They are usually manned and often will have free coffee. The greeters that work there are trained on interesting places to see about their state and many of them actually know the roads and will be able to give you useful tips.

The shelves at these welcome centers are stocked with useful publications and one of the things I recommend doing is picking up the “Official” road map from as many of these places as you can. Maps can be interesting to review and come in useful if you want to head back in the same direction in the future. There are other publications as well located on the shelves such as “Oklahoma; more than a dust bowl”.

Kentucky, NY, WV, and Oklahoma have the best welcome centers in my opinion but I believe you will find them all worth a stop.
